First off does your husband believe anything this person has to say about you? Is this person worth listening to, and giving any credence to? In other words, your husband didn't believe anything this person had to say, and if you have to defend someone against the accusations than maybe they are true. If you don't say a thing your letting that person know they are not believeable. What would you have your husband do, get into a fight, then go to jail, sorry it is not worth it, just because someone slandered you. If it is that bad bring slander charges against them. Sue them.
