What is fraternity hazing?

I'm watching CSI and they were talking about haazing and this guy was hazing this other guy.and they said it was illegal and they talking about they were in a society.......blah blah blah and the guy he was hazing got shot but what ever.....what dois it mean......Just wondering......thanks
