All computer geeks....advice needed...?

I am going to be purchasing a new high-performance computer or laptop. Laptop would be preferable for portability reasons, but I realize they are more costly. I need to be able to multi-task using memory and processor-intesive software such as CAD and Excel, as well as have multi-media capabilities and desktop publishing.
